What is magnification ?
the degree to which the size of the an image is larger than the object itself. Expressed as x10
the degree to which it is possible to distinguish between two objects that are very close together.
the degree to which you can see the individual components of the cell
The light microscope can have a magnification of up to x 1500
The maximum resolving power of light is 2000mn
Why do sections of tissues need to be cut into thin slices for examination under a microscope
If the sample is too thick there would be too many cells overlapping each other so you would not be able to focus on the cells.
Light cannot penetrate thick slices of tissue, so no detail would be seen
what is the definition of staining (in microscopy)
any process that helps to reveal or distinguish different features.
The use of iodine to make transparent substances easier to see under a light microscope
Each type of organelle has a specific role in the cell what is this called
specialisation
differentiation
division of labour
ultrastructure
