Question Answer
What are the subclasses of the Insecta class? Apterygota (no wings) Pterygota (winged)
Pterygota is further divided into... Exopterygota ("external wings") Endopterygota ("internal wings")
What are the main features of Exopterygota? -Immature = adult in aspect and habits -Nymph have wing primordia that develop externally -Simple incomplete metamorphosis (heterometabolous)
Which major orders belong to Exopterygota? -Orthoptera -Psocoptera -Hemiptera -Thysanoptera
What are the main features of Endopterygota? -Immature differs from the adult in habits and aspect. -The wing primordia of larva are of internal developent -Complete metamorphosis (holometabolous)
Which major orders belong to Endopterygota? -Coleoptera -Lepidoptera -Neuroptera -Hymenoptera -Diptera
To which orders belong most of the agricultural pest species? -Hemiptera (33%) -Lepidoptera (30%) -Coleoptera (20%) Less species per order: Thysanoptera, Diptera & Hymenoptera
To which orders belong most of the beneficial insects? -Hymenoptera -Diptera -Coleoptera -Neuroptera -Hemiptera

Lepidoptera
Characteristics of Lepidoptera -Adult: body & wings covered with scales or hairs. Mouthparts = proboscis (feed on nectar or don't feed at all) -Larva: Eruciform (caterpillar like) , chewing mouthparts (phytophagous)
Characteristics of Diptera -Mesothoracic wings = halteres for balance -Saprophytic adults -Apodous larva feed on soft tissue
Characteristics of Hymenoptera -Mouthparts: jaws for chewing and modified lip adapted to suck. -Narrowing between the 1st and 2nd abdominal segment. -Types of larvae: eruciforms (phytophagous) and apodous (parasitoids) -No sex :( arrhenotoky parthenogenesis
Characteristics of Coleoptera - Chewing mouthparts both in larval and adult stage - Elytra: sclerotized mesothoracic wings - Most species are herbivores but there are also many predators.
Characteristics of Neuroptera - Predatory (both adult and larvae) - Campodeiform larvae, chewing or sucking mouthparts. They feed on small arthropods, aphids, coccids and mites. -Important families: Chrysopidae, Hemerobiidae & Coniopterygidae.
