Question Answer
THE THREE VITAL FUNCTIONS NUTRITION INTERACTION REPRODUCTION
NUTRITION The process of obtaining the substances necessary for health and growth. It includes the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and excretory systems.
REPRODUCTION The process by which living things produce offspring.
VIVIPAROUS Animals that give birth to a young that have already developed inside the mother's body.
OVIPAROUS Animals that produce eggs to reproduce.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM It breaks down food into nutrients that our body uses to give us energy. It also eliminates waste.
PARTS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Teeth, pharynx, oesophagus, liver, stomach, pancreas, small and large intestine, rectum, and anus.
WHICH PARTS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM BREAK DOWN FOOD? Mouth (teeth and saliva), stomach, and small intestine.
WHICH PARTS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM ABSORB NUTRIENTS? Small and large intestine.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM This system lets us inhale oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM It carries blood with oxygen and nutrients to all parts fo the body and collects waste substances and carbon dioxide.
EXCRETORY SYSTEM This system cleans the blood of waste substances in the form of urine and sweat and eliminates them from the body.
WHEN DOES DIGESTION BEGIN? When the teeth grind the food.
HOW ARE CAVITIES FORMED? When eating the sugar bacteria form acids that attack the teeth forming cavities or caries.
WHAT IS SALIVA FOR? It breaks down the food with the help of the teeth and the tongue and forming the bolus.
WHAT ARE GASTRIC JUICES? Substances secreted by the stomach which continue to break down the food and kill harmful bacteria.
HOW IT IS CALLED THE LIQUID FORMED WITH THE BOLUS AND THE GASTRIC JUICES? Chyme
WHICH ORGANS SECRETE JUICES? The stomach, the pancreas and the liver.
WHAT IS THE SMALL INTESTINE FOR? It finishes breaking down the food and starts absorbing nutrients from the food into the blodstream.
WHAT IS THE OESOPHAGUS FOR? It pushes the bolus into the stomach.
WHAT IS THE LARGE INTESTINE FOR? It absorbs water and minerals.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FAECES? They wait in the rectum and are expelled from the body by the anus.
HOW MANY SALIVA DO WE PRODUCE DAILY AND WHY? Approx. 1.5 litres. It is necessary for good digestion
WHY DO WE HAVE HARMLESS BACTERIA IN OUR INTESTINES? These bacteria help us to break down and absorb food and nutrients.
