Question Answer
Why has the Human Impact, on the Environment, intensified in recent years? *Growth of Consumption *Expansion of Cities/Industry *Application of advanced Agricultural Techniques *Development of Transport
What can the lack of balance in the relationship between the natural world and society cause? Puts the Conservation of Nature at risk and can cause Environmental Crises
Definition of Environment The natural world in which people, animals and plants live
Definition of Carbon Dioxide Gas that people and animals breathe out from their lungs
Definition of Waste Something not suitable to use
Definition of Acid Rain Rain which contains chemicals from factories
Definition of Hazard Something that can be dangerous for living beings; risk
Definition of Flood Large amount of water that covers an area which should be dry
Definition of Ecosystem All the plants and animals in a particular area considered together with their surroundings
Definition of Pollution The action of making the air and water dirty and dangerous
Definition of Sources A piece of equipment that is available for someone to use
Planet Earth is made up of 4 interrelated elements which are... *Lithosphere *Hydrosphere *Atmosphere *Biosphere
What is the Lithosphere? The surface of the Earth
What is the Hydrosphere? All the water on the Earth
What is the Atmosphere? The gaseous layer that surrounds the Earth
What is the Biosphere? All the living beings on the Earth
What do these elements have in "common"? They aren't indepentdent, thay all share close and complex relationships (complicated ecosystem)
What is the main source of energy of our planet? The Sun
And the origin of life? The SUn
Some Sun benefits are... *Prevents freezing temperatures (heating the surface of the planet) *Allows plants to grow *Which produces oxygen and organic material *Water cycle (rain)
What is a hazard? Something that can be dangerous for living beings.
What are the types of hazards that exist? *Natural *Caused by humans
What are the main types of hazards? *Hurricanes *Earthquakes *Floods *Volcanic Eruptions
What are Hurricanes? Very strong winds that bring heavy rain
What are Floods? It happens when it rains a lot over a short period of time and the land cannot absorb all the water. Also happens when mountain snow melts or dams break
What are Earthquakes? It's one of the consequences of the movement of the Tectonic Plates.
What is a Volcanic Eruption? Also caused by the movement of Tectonic Plates
What types of hazards caused by humans exist? *Technological Hazards *Environmental Pollution
Types of Tecnological Hazards... *Nuclear Power Stations, an accident could cause very toxic radiocative material to escape *Chemical Products can also be very toxic
Types of Environmental Pollution... *Acid Rain (air pollution is so bad, that nitrogen oxides and sulphur enter raindrops) *Waste Residue , many factories directly pour water from industrial processes into rivers *Climate change, global warming
What are the basic elements that make up The Earth? *Lithosphere *Hydrosphere *Atmosphere *Biosphere
What are the main problems affecting the environment? Acid Rain, Waste Residue and Climate Change
