Question Answer
Three States of Matter Everything is made of matter There are three states of matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas
Solid Properties Liquid Properties Gas Properties Solid Properties regular arrangement very close together vibrate- fixed positions Liquid Properties random arrangement close together flow around each other Gas Properties random arrangement further apart move quickly in all directions
When a particle changes state: particles stay same way particles arranged changes way particle moves changes
A pure substance will: melt/freeze at 1 specific temperature boil/condense at 1 specific temperature
Changing States amount of energy required for substance to change state depends on amount energy required to overcome forces of attraction between particles Substances that have high melting points due to strong bonds include ionic compounds, metals and giant covalent structures
The Stronger The Forces Of Attraction: greater amount of energy required to overcome them higher melting and boiling point
In substances that contain small molecules: bonds within molecules= strong covalent bonds forces of attraction weaker= little energy required to overcome them melting/boiling points low
State Symbols aqueous=dissolved in water
