What is: "SOCIAL IMAGINATION"? The capacity to UNDERSTAND a person's EXPERIENCES by understanding the SOCIETY and CONTEXT they are living in first. It acknowledges the patterns of society that impact an individual/group's life
What is meant by the term: "DIVERSITY"? Why is it important? The different experiences caused by social structure. Diversity is crucial to understand society itself. The experiences from diverse groups pattern social change and structure.
Explain 'GLOBALIZATION'. Why is it important and a sociological issue? Globalization defines the LINK between the fundamental systems of society AND other societies of the world. The INCREASE in 'travel capability' and 'telecommunication' encourages globalization.
What influences did the age of ENLIGHTENMENT have upon the development of SOCIOLOGICAL THINKING? The age of ENLIGHTENMENT encourages the belief that humans can SOLVE social problems.
Who are 2 sociological thinkers that support ENLIGHTENMENT and how? Auguste Comte: expressed POSITIVISM - a way of thinking that outlines the belief that understanding/observing human behaviour can solve society's problems. Alexis de Tocqueville: main belief revolves around HUMAN EQUALITY as he thought that democratic value and human equality impacted social institutions positively.
Describe: "SOCIAL STRUCTURE" as a key sociological concept. is the general make up society from contributing factors such as 'social relationships' and 'social institutions. e.g. Social class - shapes the access of resources toward different groups/classes. Social class guides human behaviour regardless of whether it is seen or not.
Describe: "SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS" as a key sociological concept. Social institutions: are the ORGANIZED SYSTEMS of social behaviour. e.g. family, marriage, government, education - they all impact and express social behaviour.
Describe: "SOCIAL CHANGE" as a key sociological concept. Social change: refers to the change of society over time as society is constantly changing. e.g. INDUSTRIALIZATION is a form of social change as it defines the transition from an agricultural society to a more advanced/economically driven society.
Describe: "SOCIAL INTERACTION" as a key sociological concept. Social Interaction: refers to the MEANINGFUL behaviours between two or more people. Social interaction can initiate change in behaviour as people react and respond in certain ways. e.g. Interaction with family members may be different from interaction with work colleague.
What are some possible JOBS with a degree in sociology? JOBS: can very across different industries as the skills learnt can be vastly applicable to different jobs. research skills -> analysing BUSINESS data sociologists -> can work in communities with different cultural/social backgrounds.
