Penal Law	Law that imposes punishment as opposed to (for instance) a law that provides only the right of a victim to compensation
Provincial Superior Courts	*tasked with adjudication (formal judgement) of the most serious matters, civil & criminal
Superior Trial Court	presides over more serious offences (murder)
Provincial Trial Courts	presides over most criminal & youth justice bails, trials & preliminary hearings
Indictment	formal written accusation, usually reserved for more serious crimes
True Defence	set of circumstances that, if proven by accused, will excuse them of the crime (e.g. defence of insanity)
Denunciation	formal expression that conduct is unacceptable
Retribution	punishment for transgressions
Deterrence	Principle of sentencing or punishment intended to discourage citizens from offending or re-offending
Preliminary Supremacy	concept that legislative body is superior to other institutions, including executive & courts
Rule of Law	principle that government, individuals, corporations must follow the law; governments may take actions that limit the activities or rights of citizens only in accordance with substantiate and procedural requirements prescribed by law
Habeas Corpus	the right of an accused to appear before a court & not be detained without just cause
Inter-jurisdictional	relating to crimes, legislation, or other legal issues that cross the boundaries of nations, provinces, or other jurisdiction
