What is a Tourniquet? Something you tie around a part of the body to put pressure on blood vessels to stop the loss of blood
What is a body snatcher? A person who used to obtain dead bodies illegally and sell them to medical schools for dissection
What do you call the procedure of giving blood from a donor to a patient? A transfusion
What is a by-law? A law made by a town's local authority that affects only that town
What do you call the technique that uses heat to seal blood vessels and stop bleeding? Cautery
What is a vaccination? A safe way of stimulating the body's immune system against a particular disease
What is a Welfare State? The coordination and provision by the government of all matters affecting the health of the people

What is cloning? Using cells from one organism to make another identical organism
What is crystallography? Using radiation to take a high-power X-ray photograph

What is dissection? Cutting open a body to examine its internal structure

What are genetics? The study of genes and inherited characteristics
What is an anaesthetic? A substance that affects your nervous system so that you are less aware of sensation and don't feel pain
What do you call the scientific study of the body, bones and muscles? Anatomy
What are anti-biotics? Drugs that stop infections caused by bacteria
What are antibodies? Special cells in your body that fight infection and disease
What is inoculation? A way of giving the patient a mild dose of an illness so their body can build up and immunity
What do you call something that fights against sepsis and the microbes that create infection? Antiseptic
What is Laissez-faire? The government should not interfere with industry and private business...like medicine
What is an apothecary? A person who made medicines and ointments using ingredients such as herbs and spices

What is a magic bullet? A chemical drug that kills the microbes causing a specific disease without harming the rest of the body

What does aseptic mean? Sterile; free from microbes that cause infection
What is astrology? The study of stars and planets and how they are thought to affect humans and nature
What is patent medicine? A mixture that has been created by one person or company and is sold under a particular brand name
What do you call an old type of hospital for the mentally ill? An asylum
What is physiology? The way organs function within the body
What are bacteria? Micro-organisms that live in soil,water,plants and animals that can cause dieases
