NOVEMBER- Russia invades Finland: russia wanted more land to act as a buffer. finnish held out for 3 months. | 1941 JUNE- Beginning of Op.Barbarossa: this was an invasion of the USSR. hitler sent in 3 million soldiers to take Leningrad, Moscow and Kiev. DECEMBER- Attack on Pearl Harbour: Japan attacked a US navy base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. Over 2000 US personnel were killed. Japan believed it would discourage the US from becoming involved in WWII. DECEMBER- America declare war on Japan and as a result of pacts Germany had to declare war on the US. |
1942 Battle of Stalingrad: Germans began the offensive again and split their army. German initially took most of the city but in late 1942 were attacked by the Russians and were trapped in Stalingrad | 1943 TURNING POINT: the germans were forced to surrender against Hitler's orders. At the same time the siege of Leningrad came to an end after over 900 days. the russians went on to defeat Germany in the Battle of Kursk and Battle of Minsk. SEPTEMBER- allies invade and take Italy from Mussolini. NOVEMBER- Teheran Conference: the big three; Stalin, Churchill & Roosevelt met to discuss a second front. they planned the D-Day Landings and made plans for after the war. |
1944 JUNE 6th- D-Day Landings: allied forces launch an offensive on the Germans in France. they landed on beaches in Normandy and was significant fighting. Great progress made in first 11 day; germans almost pushed out of France |

February- Yalta Conference: had the greatest implacations post world war. Russia restain its half of Poland, recieve reparations from Germany. all liberated countries have free elections, UN would be formed and Germany split between allies.

APRIL 15th 1945: the Russians reach Berlin April 30th 1945: Hitler kills himself in his bunker aware that a German defeat is imminent May 8th 1945 'Victory in Europe Day': Germans are forced to surrender to the allied forces. August 1945: America drops the first ever atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan to force japan to surrender and prevent loss of American solidiers in a land invasion. September 2nd 1945: Japan surrender to USA. WWII is over. |
