Medication Assisting VS Administration Issues | Aiding in administration of medication is only legal in rest/retirement homes by PSW: Oral, Topical, Eye/Ear/Nose Drops and Patches. Assisting involves: Helping clients to self medicate, Handing them medications, Opening bottles. Administering involves: Measuring medication, Getting them into clients body, requires judgement and knowledge. Person has right to refuse medication. |

LTC Act 2010 | Administration of drugs: 1) Ensure no drug is taken by wrong client 2) Ensure drug is administered right way 3) Subject to 4 and 5, none but physician, nurse, etc can administer drugs 4) Nurse may permit staff to apply topical cream if supervised and trained. 5) No resident administers drug themselves unless approved. |
Retirement Homes Act 2010 | Administration of drugs: no drugs not prescribed should be administered by staff. Dont administer in different way than prescribed. No one can administer drugs without training. Member of college supervises administration to client. No volunteers can administer drugs. Must receive instructions on act with EACH client, even if done before. Know when/who is supervisor, client is comfortable. Scope of practice includes: your education/training, your employer policies, your provincial legislation. |
