Question Answer
Exothermic An exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that releases energy by light or heat.
Endothermic An endothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that takes in energy from the surroundings.
Oxidation Oxidation is any chemical reaction that involves the moving of electrons. Specifically, it means the substance that gives away electrons is oxidised.
Neutralisation Neutralisation occurs when a base is reacted with an acid. The OH- ions in the base react with the H+ ions in the acid to form H2O, water.
Thermal decomposition Thermal decomposition is a process that causes a chemical compound to break down into simpler chemical compounds or elements under heat.
Activation Energy The activation energy of a chemical reaction is the minimum energy that is needed to make the reaction happen. It usually has the symbol Ea.
Exothermic Reaction Profile
Endothermic Reaction Profile
Catalyst Catalysts are used in reactions to lower the activation energy
Reactant Collisions For a chemical reaction to occur, the reactant particles must collide. But collisions with too little energy do not produce a reaction. The rate of reaction depends on the rate of successful collisions between reactant particles. The more successful collisions there are, the faster the rate of reaction.
Calculating the mass of a compound To find the relative formula mass of a compound, you add together the relative atomic mass values for all the atoms in its formula. Find the Mass of carbon monoxide. The Atomic Mass of carbon is 12 and the Atomic Mass of oxygen is 16. The Mass of carbon monoxide is 12 + 16 = 28.
Bond-breaking Bond-making During a chemical reaction: Bonds in the reactants are broken New bonds are made in the products Energy is absorbed to break bonds. Bond-breaking is an endothermic process. Energy is released when new bonds form. Bond-making is an exothermic process
