The Suffragists There were many societies of women campaigning for the vote - in 1897, they all formed the NUWSS (the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies), known as the suffragists, led by Millicent Fawcett.
The Suffragists Were Not Effective They failed to get the vote for women by 1914.
The Suffragists were Effective They managed to get women's suffrage bills proposed to Parliament several times from 1900 to 1914 - the closest was the Conciliation Bill of 1910. They kept the suffrage in the public's eye when the PM and others didn't want to
NUWSS Facts By 1914, they had over 400 branches in the UK and over 100,000 members. Mainly middle-class women - were branches in northern textile towns and some men were also members. Used lots of propaganda - newsletters, posters. Held large rallies like the Hyde Park demonstration in 1908 and the Women's Pilgrimage of June 1913.
