Question Answer
What is the difference between a compound and a mixture? A compound is joined by a chemical bond whilst a mixture is not
List some methods of separating. • sieving • filtrating • distillation • evaporation • chromatography
Define: a) miscible liquids b) immiscible liquids a) liquids that do dissolve into each other- often separated using fractional distilling b) liquids that do not dissolve into each other- for example, oil and water
What is fractional distilling? • an effective way of separating miscible liquids using a fractional column. • this is possible because of the different boiling points of the liquids in the mixture
What is the difference between simple and fractional distillation? • simple distillation is used when the substances have a significant difference in boiling points • whereas if the boiling points of the two liquids in the mixture are close, fractional distillation is more efficient
What is paper chromatography? separates mixtures of substances dissolved in a solvent as they move up a piece of chromatography paper
Why does chromatography work? The different substances are separated because of their different solubilities in the solvent used.
Where is chromatography used? It is used in the food industry and forensic science.
