Question Answer
squared (square) number the answer to any number, times by itself. E.g. 1x1=1, 2x2=4, 3x3=9, 4x4=16, 5x5=25
square root a number that can be divided by two equal numbers (i.e. the opposite of a square number) e.g. square root of 25 = 5 because 5x5=25
cube (cubed) number the answer to a number times itself, then times itself again: e.g. 3x3x3 = 3 cubed = 27
cube root the opposite to a cube number - find 3 identical numbers that when multiplied, give the original number: e.g. cube root of 125 = 5 (5x5x5=125)
prime number a number that only has 2 factors: 1 and itself. 1 is not a prime number as it does not have two factors
composite number a number larger than 0 that is not prime
numerator the 'top' number in a fraction. The number of parts that we are 'looking at'
denominator the 'bottom' number in a fraction. The number of parts that a whole is broken in to
improper fraction when the numerator is larger than the denominator - the fraction is larger than 1 whole
mixed number fraction 1 or more wholes, and a fraction of a whole: e.g. 3 1/2
dividing fractions stick, change, flip
factor a number that another number can be divided by which gives a whole number answer
multiple a number that is several 'lots of' another number - e.g. 35 is a multiple of 5 because 5x7 = 35
factor pair a number that can be divided by two other numbers - e.g. 3 and 4 are a factor pair of 12 because 3x4 = 12
how to divide fractions stick, change, flip
2 operations that need identical denominators add and subtract
the operation that doesn't need changing when performing a calculation with fractions multiply
prime factors the number at the bottom of a factor tree - keep finding factor pairs until you can't find any more 12 | 3 x 4 | | prime 2 x 2
common multiple the number that is a multiple of two numbers: e.g. 12 is a common factor of 3 and 4 3, 6, 9, 12 4, 8, 12 because it is in both their times tables
common factor a factor of two different numbers 4 is a common factor of 12 and 16 factors of 12 = 1, 2, 3, (4), 6, 12 factors of 16 = 1, 2, (4), 8, 16
