| Question | Answer |
| Retribution | Revenge for a victim or their family |
| Deterrence | Keep criminals off the streets |
| Reform | Improving or helping a criminal's behavior |
| Removal | To warn others from committing the same crime |
| Reeve | Local official elected by a community to bring people justice - Later known as a Shire Reeve / Sheriff |
| Collective Responsibility | Everyone in the community is responsible for the actions of others in the village |
| King's Peace | The King's duty to apply rules and laws to keep the country peaceful - e.g. King Athelstan |
| Taking Oath | People who could swear their innocence to God in public. People could help support these claims, known as 'Oath Helpers' |

| Ordeal by Cold water | (Used for slaves) The accused was dunk into a river and proven innocent if they sunk. |
| Ordeal by Sacrament | (Used for Priests) The accused ate the Bread / Host and were innocent if they ate it without choking |
| Maiming | Mutilation of the tongue or hand |
| Werguild | Fines payed to the victim for crimes committed |
| Blood Feud | The right of a victim or their family to track down and kill the accused / murderer |
| Pillory | Secured the arms and neck for greater humiliation in public |
| Stocks | Secured the ankles for greater humiliation in public |
