Question Answer
Christopher Columbus, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492 from Europe to America.
Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy and his real name is Cristoforo Colombo. Christopher Columbus is his Anglicized name.
Columbus was granted 3 Ships for his journey. The ships were given to him in 1492 by Queen Isabella of Spain. Those 3 ships were called the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
Columbus first landed on an island he named San Salvador. However it was originally called Guahanal.
Guahanal was already occupied by people known as the Arawak. He called these people Indians as he thought he had arrived in the Indies on his way to Japan.
Columbus died in 1506 following a turbulent few years. He was imprisoned after coming back from America for not delivering on his promise of riches. Today however he is remembered across America on Christopher Columbus Day.
