What is the Proclamation Act? It prohibited English settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains to appease the Native Americans.
What is the Sugar Act? It imposed tax on foreign molasses, sugar, and other goods imported into the colonies.
What is the Currency Act? Prohibited colonial governments from issuing paper money.
What were the "Sons of Liberty"? Secret groups, that colonists formed, in response to the Stamp Act, where they staged riots against agents who collected the taxes and marked items with a special stamp.
What was the Townshend act and when was it passed? It was passed in 1767 and it placed taxes on lead, glass, paint, paper, and tea.

What was the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and when was it passed? It was passed on May 25, 1854, and it nullified the provisions creating the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. It allowed the people of these two territories to decide for themselves whether or not to permit slavery there.
What was the Dred Scott decision? A court case, where abolitionists stated that since Scott had lived in a free state and free territory, that he was in actuality a free man. Supreme Court decided that residing in a free state and free territory did not make Scott a free man, because he was not a citizen of the United States. The Court then ruled that the old Missouri Compromise was now unconstitutional because Congress did not have the power to prohibit slavery in the Territories.

What happened to slavery after the Civil War? By executive proclamation and constitutional amendment, slavery was officially ended.

What was the Dawes Act of 1887? The law was intended to break up the Native American communities, and bring about assimilation into white culture, by deeding portions of the reservation lands to individual Native Americans who were expected to farm their land.
What dramatic changes took place after the Civil War? Machines replaced hand labor; extensive nationwide railroad services facilitated the wider distribution of goods; new products were made available in large quantities; large amounts of money from bankers and investors were available for the expansion of business operations.
How did the use of machines in industries change life? It enabled workers to produce a large quantity of goods, much faster than they could by hand. Business increased, so more workers were hired, creating more job opportunities.
What is "division of labor"? Workers were hired and assigned to perform specific jobs within the production process."Division of labor" increased the rate of production.
What happened when the rate of production was increased? Businesses lowered prices of their products, making them more affordable for people. Sales and businesses were increasingly successful and profitable.

What was the Truman Doctrine? It offered military aid to countries in danger of communist upheaval.
When did the United Nations form and why? Formed in 1949, to replace the defunct League of Nations, and to ensure peace in the world.

What are the two most significant political changes? 1. Ratification of the 17th amendment, which required that all U.S. senators be chosen by popular election. 2. Ratification of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote.

What happened to labor laws in the 1830's? Labor movement to improve working conditions ad increase wages. It did not completely catch on until after the Civil War.
