Thematic transformation Franz Liszt's method for transforming thematic material into new themes to provide unity, clarity and narrative-like logic in programmatic music.
Recital Term popularized by Franz Liszt for his solo performances. Today it is used to mean and performance given by a soloist or small group in an academic environment.
Concert etude A piece that is designed to develop a certain technique or skill whether it be instrumental or performance.
Polonaise Polish triple meter dance genre.
Mazurka Polish triple meter dance genre characterized by accents on the second and third beat and often dotted figure on first beat. Also stylized piano pieces based on such a dance.
Nocturne Type of romantic piece popular in romantic period. highly embellished melody sonorous accompaniment and contemplative mood
Ballade A French form fixe. Normally in 3 stanzas in which each has musical form aabC and ends with a refrain. Also an instrumental piece inspired by genre of narrative poem.
