Question Answer
Difference between pure and impure substances? Pure substances - made of one type of particle Impure substances - made up of a mixture of two or more types of particles
Definition of solute? The substance dissolved in another substance.
Definition of solvent? The substance which dissolves another substance.
Definition of solution? A mixture where a substance is dissolved in another.
Characteristics of a solution? It is clear, and homogeneous. Can be coloured or colourless.
Importance of water for life? It dissolves chemicals that carry out reactions, so they can move quickly.
Definition of dilute solution? Little solute dissolved in solvent.
Definition of concentrated solution? Large amount of solute dissolved in solvent.
Definition of saturated solution? Solution is so concentrated that no more solute can be dissolved in solute.
Definition of suspension? Mixture where a substance(dispersed phase) is spread, but not dissolved, in another substance(dispersion medium).
Example of solid/liquid suspension? Sand in water.
Example of solid/gas suspension? Dust in air.
Example of liquid/liquid suspension? Oil and water.
Definition of colloid? Microscopic particles(dispersed phase) spread, but not dissolved, in another substance(dispersion medium).
Definition and example of emulsion? Liquid/liquid colloid (e.g. mayonnaise)
Definition and example of foam? Gas/liquid colloid (e.g. whipped cream)
Definition and example of gel? Liquid/solid colloid(e.g. jelly)
Definition and example of sol? Solid/liquid colloid(e.g. blood)
