Epistemology * What is true? * Cause of problem for patient * Meaningful activities support full participation in life situations
Axiology * Values/Standards * Right from wrong * Ethics
Metaphysical * What is my purpose? * How to best assist patient * Conceptualize occupations * Both a means and an end to therapy
Holism Idea that the mind and body are a single integrated system. "Whole" person; Total picture
Humanism Clients treated like a person, not an object. People capable of change. Treated equally, respectfully, and fairly.
Organismic Person's behaviors influence the physical/social environment and, in turn, a person is impacted by changes in environment.
Why COTA needs to know the philosophy... 1. Represents the profession's views on the nature of its' existence 2. Guides a professional's actions 3. Direct relationship between growth of profession & its ability to justify the need for it 4. COTA must appreciate philosophy in order to understand why certain techniques work.
Adolf Meyer Wrote paper on "The Philosophy of Occupational Therapy - laid foundation for practice of OT. * Observed people in every day life * Addressed the value of time, work, and occupations which provide meaning to life.
Meyer's Beliefs * Man holistic * Sense of time, imagination, need to occupy self makes man different than other organisms * Capacity to learn from past experience * Use creativity to alter environment; make it better * Need for Occupation Emphasized
Need for Occupations * Not only employment * Also need leisure, everyday activities to support life, rest, and sleep * Meyer stressed balance among all occupations to be healthy
Major Premises of Profession of Occupational Therapy 1. Engagement in occupation provides opportunity for individual to influence their well-being by gaining fulfillment in life 2. Via occupation, able to achieve MASTERY AND COMPETENCE; learn skills to cope w/problems & adapt to limitations
Major Premises of Profession of Occupational Therapy 3. As competence gained, autonomy can be expressed, independence achieved 4. Autonomy = Choice and Control over environmental circumstances; Opportunity for exerting self-determination should be reflected in intervention strategies
Major Premises of Profession of Occupational Therapy 5. OT a collaborative process between therapist & recipient of care, whose values respected 6. Concerned with the unity of body and mind in "doing" - "Whole" person
