They fled because they were dissatisfied with the economical and political conditions Khrushchev suggested that 4 powers should leave Berlin. Talks were held but USSR announced an american U2 spy plane had been shot down and talks dissolved From then on relation soured
Brain drain would cripple E.Germany's economy so something had to be done On one day the entire maths department of the uni of Leipzig vanished 13/9/61 K closed the border between E+W.Berlin police placed barbed wire around the 50km stretch as the day progressed a wall was under construction, the following day it was completed
Peace was maintained but at a price Families were split up by the wall and strict travel restrictions Flow of refugees stopped and the economic crisis was slowly evaporating
