Question Answer
Roles -Produce female gametes, Ovum (Ova as plural) -Receive male gametes (spermatozoa) for fertilisation -Provides 'site' for fertilisation & for development of zygote
Zygote Cell that forms when a sperm fertilises an egg
Ectopic pregnancy When fertilised ovum is implanted in fallopian tube instead of travelling through the tube & implanting in the uterus
Female gametes (Ova) -Larger than male gametes (sperm) -Doesn't move, but has large food store -Produced once monthly by the two ovaries -Ovum travels along oviduct/Fallopian tube towards the uterus
Fertilisation -Ovum travels along oviduct/Fallopian tube towards the uterus -Ovum fertilises into a zygote whilst in oviduct/fallopian tube & implants in uterus -Zygote grows & develops into baby in uterus
Hormone -A chemical messenger produced by glands to alter the activity of one or more specific target organs
Behaviour (during puberty) Girls become more maternal (motherly) & attracted to boys
Pituitary gland -Produces hormones which effect other endocrine organs -One pituitary hormone stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen
Endocrine Glands which secrete hormones or other products directly into the blood
Oestrogen -Circulates in blood & stimulates secondary sex characteristics (characteristics that appear during puberty) -Stops FSH being produced so that only one egg matures in a cycle -Stimulates the pituitary gland to release the hormone LH
Secondary sex characteristics -Breasts develop & increase in size -Nipples become larger -Vagina increases in size -Hips become broader (pelvis widens & fat is deposited) -Hair develops in pubic region & under armpits
Puberty can be delayed in... ...Extremely muscular girls (e.g. gymnasts)
