Question Answer
How is alpha particles stopped? -stopped by a sheet of paper
What is alpha particles made of? -2 protons and 2 electrons -it is identical to a helium nucleus
Describe what happens? -it occurs in heavy elements as they have too many protons to be stable -so by releasing alpha particles they become more stable
Describe what happens{beta} -a neutron in the nucleus spontaneously decays, into a proton and an electron -the proton stays in the nucleus while the electron flies out
Describe what happens{gamma] -if a nucleus still has enough energy it can get rid of extra energy by releasing a gamma ray -gamma rays may be emitted alongside alpha and beta particles
How is beta stopped? -beta is stopped by perspex
How is gamma stopped? -gamma is stopped by lead
What is the lightest and what is the heaviest? -the heaviest is alpha and gamma is the lightest
