Question Answer
What are the sub-atomic particles that atoms are made up of called? Protons, neutrons and electrons.
What are electrons? Negatively charged particles that spin around the positive centre of the atom in cirlces called energy levels. Their mass is zero.
What are protons? Positively charged particles that are contained in the nucleus of the atom. Thy have a relative mass of one.
What are neutrons? Neutrons are also contained in the nucleus of the atom, but have no charge. They also have relative mass of one.
Why does the nucleus have an overall positive charge? It contains only protons (positive) and neutrons (neutral).
Why do atoms have no overall charge? They contain equal numbers of positive protons and negative electrons.
What does the atomic number tell you about an element? How many protons there are in an atom of that element.
What is the mass number of an atom equal to? The number of protons plus the number of neutrons.
What does the electron arrangement of an atom show? How the electrons are arranged in the energy levels.
What are isotopes? Atoms with the same atomic number, but different mass number.
What can the RAM be used for? To give an indication of the relative abundance of isotopes in a sample
What is an ion, and how are they formed? An ion is a charged particle, formed when atom gains or loses electrons due to an imbalance of electrons to protons.
Metal atoms...to form... Non-metal atoms...to form... Lose electrons, positive ions Gain electrons, negative ions
Why do atoms gain or lose electrons? They want to be like the noble gases which have a stable electron arrangement, and therefore won't react.
