Question Answer
Why do organisms need energy? Metabolism Movement Active Transport: Ions and molecules move against a concentration gradient which requires energy Maintenance, repair and division of cells Production of substances such as enzymes and hormones Maintenance of body temperature
How does ATP store its energy? 1)ATP has 3 phosphate groups which makes the molecule unstable and so have a low A.E (therefore easy to break) 2)When they do break energy is released ATP+H2O→ADP+Pi As water is used, its a hydrolysis reaction
Describe how ATP is synthesised from ADP This occurs in 3 ways: 1) Photophosphorylation: takes place in chlorophyll 2) Oxidative phosphorylation: Occurs in mitochondria during the process of electron transport 3) Substrate-Level phosphorylation: This is when phosphate groups are tranferred from donor molecules to ADP to make ATP
Why is ATP a better immediate source of energy than glucose? -The hydrolysis of ATP to ADP is a single step reaction that releases immediate energy - Each ATP molecule releases less energy than each glucose molecule. Therefore, the energy for reaction is released in smaller, more manageable quantities. so it releases small amounts of energy
ATP is useful in many biological processes. Explain why. 4 Marks
Describe how ATP is made in mitochondria. 6 Marks
Humans synthesise more than their body mass of ATP each day. Explain why it is necessary for them to synthesise such a large amount of ATP 2 Marks
