Question | Answer |
First Ionisation Enthalpy | The first ionisation energy is the energy needed to remove one electron from each atom in a mole of gaseous atoms forming one mole of gaseous ions each with a single positive charge. |
Ionic Bonding | Occurs between metals and non metals. Electrons are transferred from metal atoms to the non metal atoms. This often gives both atoms a stable electronic structure. |
Properties of Ionic substances | They have high melting and boiling points. They usually dissolve in water and can conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water. |
Covalent Bonding | Occurs between non metals. Bonds between atoms are formed by sharing electrons. This is called covalent bonding. By sharing electrons the atoms achieve a more stable electron structure. |
