Murdock Murdock argues that there are four main functions of the family. sexual- expressing sexuality in a socially approved context reproduction- the family should provide some stability for the reproduction and rearing of children socialization- the family is important for primary socialization of children. children learn the acceptable behavior and the cultures- helps their beliefs and values economic- the family provides food and shelter
Parsons argued that there are two functions of the family that are found in every society. primary socialization- is very important that children learn the norms and values of society. if they didn't society would cease to exist. it becomes part of the child's personality.
Parsons He also argues the stabilization of human personalities- the woman has an expressive(caring and loving) role, and the father is the bread winner.
Criticism of Murdock and Parsons Murdock and Parsons see the nuclear family as perfect. they don't look at the conflict in family. this includes domestic abuse and child abuse
Criticisms of Murdock and Parsons Parsons view of woman and men are very out of date. this was true in the 1950 was woman usually stayed at home. but not true now as woman are earning as well as men. both men and woman play the same roles

Criticisms of Murdock and Parsons the functionalist ignore the harmful affect of the family. the family is seen to lead to emotional stress- Leach(1967). family members demand too much from each other. Writers Laning and Cooper argue the family can be destructive and exploitative. Laning says that the family causes many mental illnesses.
Functionalist apporach the functionalist approach thinks the nuclear family is perfect. however we need to look at how the people in those families feel, and to take into account the darker side of the family.
