How does ionising radiation take place? | At a higher energy, it can destroy the nucleus of an atom. This means that when ionizing radiation passes through the tissues of the body, it actually has enough energy to damage DNA. It's why gamma rays, for example, are good at killing cancer cells through radiation treatment. Ionizing radiation is given off by radioactive material, very high-voltage equipment, nuclear reactions and stars. |
