Question Answer
Solid Particles in this state can only vibrate about a fixed point. The forces between the particles are very strong.
Liquid Particles in this state have some energy. The particles are only free to move past each other. The forces are weaker than in a solid.
Gas The particles in this state have lots of energy and little force to hold the particles together.
Evaporation During this change of state the particles in a liquid is given enough thermal energy to move free of the other particles.
Condensation This change of state means particles lose energy and can now only move past each other. The forces between the atoms become stronger.
Freezing This change of state removes energy from particles. The particles are then unable to move and can only vibrate around a fixed point.
Melting This change of state gives particles in a solid enough energy to allow them to move past one another.
Conductor This material allows heat and electricity to pass through easily. Metals are good at this because they have free electrons.
Insulator A material that is a poor transmitter of heat and electricity. Plastics and gases are good examples of this.
