Superior Towards the head (usually internal structures)
Inferior towards the feet / away from the head (usually internal structures)
Ventral Towards the belly of the anima
Dorsal Towards the back / spinal column
Cranial Towards the head, relative to current position
Caudal Towards the tail
Rostral Towards the muzzle is rostral
Proximal With reference to the limbs: Towards the junction with the body
Distal With reference to the limbs: Further from the body
Medial With reference to the limbs: Orientated towards the midline of the body
Lateral With reference to the limbs: Orientated away from the midline of the body
Axial Towards the axis of the body
Abaxial Away from the main axis of the body
Palmer With reference to the limbs below the level of the carpal /tarsal joints: Back of the forelimb
Plantar With reference to the limbs below the level of the carpal /tarsal joints: Back of the hindlimb
Solar structures of the underside of the foot
External Outside the body
Internal Inside the body
Superficial structures Structures towards the surface of the skin
Deep structures Found beneath the surface of the skin
Median plane Divides animal symmetrically in to right and left halves
Saggital plane Any plane that is parallel to the median plane
Transverse plane Line that transect any anatomical part (i.e. neck, limb) perpendicularly to its own long axis
Horizontal plane A plane at right angles to both median and transverse planes
