Question | Answer |
What is Area excavation? | Area excavation is when a large portion of the site - bigger than a trench - is excavated to allow for a clearer and un-obstructed view of the site. |
What is a trench? | A trench is a rectangular excavation pit of any size or length. Trenches are often used to excavate linear features as they are placed at 90 degrees to the feature. this allows two stratigraphy drawings to be created at either end of the trench. |
What is a test pit? | A test pit is a small meter square excavation which can be used either to evaluate the stratigraphy of a site to decide whether or not it is worth excavating or as part of an excavation sampling strategy. |
What is a box-grid or quadrant system of excavating? | A series of Baulks are left in between sections being excavated which allow four section drawings for each quadrant of the site. The baulks provide a barrow run and once excavations are finished they can be removed to view the whole site as in an area excavation. |
Who created the box-grid system? | Sir Mortimer Wheeler in the first half of the twentieth century. |
What is a quadrant excavation? | A site, usually round, is divided into four and alternate sections are excavated. This allows for two stratigraphy plans per quadrant. it enables vertical and horizontal relationships to be seen. can also be used on smaller sites e.g. post holes. |
Give an example of area excavation. | - Danebury excavations of 73 roundhouses and 500 rectangular buildings between 1969-1988. - The Chester amphitheatre project which re-examined the amphitheatre in Chester and revealed the two stages of development. |
What are excavators expected to do before and after a dig? | - Provide justification. - Use survey techniques to plan the excavation. -Ensure a proper recording system is in place. - Publish the results. |
What is a research excavation? | Excavations on a site where there is no threat of destruction to the archaeology. This means the site has more time and money than other strategies. |
