Question Answer
Afebrile Absence of a fever "My patient is afebrile"
Apnoea Absence of respiration "The patient is apnoeic and unconscious, call a code blue!" "The patient had a period of apnoea for 15 seconds"
Bradycardia Slow heart rate (less than 60 beats per minute) "the patient is bradycardic at 45 bpm" "Joan had an episode of bradycardia this morning, her HR went down to 30 for 15 seconds"
Bradypnoea Slow RR, less than 12 rpm "the patient is bradypnoeic, let's check her SpO2 and sedation score"
Febrile Pyrexia elevated body temperature equal to or above 38.0 degrees Celsius "my patient is febrile; the Dr has ordered a septic screen" "the patient is febrile to 38.9"
Hypertension High blood pressure: Systolic 140 mm Hg or above Diastolic 90 mm Hg or above "the patient had an episode of hypertension" "my patient is hypertensive, his BP is 189/110"
Hypotension Low blood pressure Systolic blood pressure 100 mmHg or below "the patient is hypotensive and is feeling light-headed" "the patient had a hypotensive episode, the BP dropped to 76/45"
Hyperventilation Deep, rapid respirations "the patient with anxiety is hyperventilating"
Hypoventilation shallow, ineffective respirations "the patient had morphine, and is now hypoventilating, let's assess her more closely"
Orthostatic hypotension Postural hypotension Clinically significant decrease in blood pressure (>20 mm Hg) related to position changes i.e. lying to standing, sitting to standing. Usually associated with symptoms i.e. light-headedness
Tachypnoeic Fast respirations, greater than 20 rpm "the patient has become slightly tachypnoeic, let's assess him to find a cause for this change"
Tachycardia Elevated HR, equal or greater than 100 bpm "the patient is tachycardic and hypotensive, let's get him to bed and assess him"
Normotensive Blood pressure within a 'normal' range
Hypoxic Cells, tissues, organs... are deprived have abnormally low levels of oxygen
Hypoxaemic Abnormally low levels of oxygen in the blood
