objectives Describe the organization of the nervous system including the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system and its two major divisions. Describe the types of cells found in the nervous systems including neurons and the types of glial cells. Describe the channels, pumps, ionic concentration gradients, and forces that act across the cell membrane to establish the resting membrane potential in muscle and in nerve cells (including the K+ and Na+ leak channels, the Na+/K+ pump). Explain why a muscle cell at rest uses very little energy whereas a neuron at rest uses a considerable amount of energy.
