Who were the Mountain men? -The Mountain men were the earliest visitors to the plains -spent their time in the rock mountains hunting and trapping animals -Sold Furs and skins at the 'rendezvous' -Mountain men like Jed Smith and Tim Bridger opened up routes to the journey west and found suitable routes for wagons.
Who were the 49'ers? The 49'ers were prospectors or gold seekers who wished to flood across the plains to make their fortune after the discovery of gold in California in 1848. Around 90,000 arrived in the state by 1849. Many had failed to find the fortune of gold that had been promised in guidebooks, written by wagon train leaders to give advice about the journey west.
The effect of other settlers.. The Mountain Men were responsible for painting a very 'rosey' picture of the land on the Pacific coast. They reported that California was a land of sunshine and fruit trees while Oregon land was perfect for farming. This sounded like a very tempting prospect to alot of people living in the eastern states.
What were the push factors for early settlers making the journey west? -The 1937 economic depression :unemployment,low price of grain and farming was poor. -Overcrowding:the population increased by 2500 percent between 1830 and 1840.
What were the pull factors for early settlers to move west? -Propaganda:- good reports sounded inviting -Government incentives:-The pre-emption bill 1842 allowed people to buy and very cheaply in Oregon.
What were the problems created by the California gold rush? -very basic housing -no rules and regulations -no effective laws or police -once having allot of money it got spent very quickly. -Racial Violence -claim jumping -fights
1837 - The Economic Depression An economic depression caused the collapse of many banks in the East. People lost their savings, wages fell and unemployment rose. The Mormon bank also collapsed and caused many non-Mormons to attack the religion. The Mormons were driven out of Kirkland.
1843 - the Great Migration About a thousand people made the journey west to Oregon. This was the highest number of migrants to make the journey west in one year so far and became known as the Great Migration.
1843 - Fort Bridger established Jim Bridger, a former mountain man, built Fort Bridger on the Oregon Trail. Fort Bridger contained a store where travelers could purchase supplies as well as workshop and forge where wagons could be repaired.
1848 - Gold discovered in California James Marshall, a carpenter employed by John Sutter to build a mill at Sutter's Fort, discovered gold. Initially news of the discovery was kept secret but once it became known 90.000 people from the East flocked to California hoping to find gold and make their fortune. Those who arrived in 1849 became known as 'Forty-niners'
1874 - Gold in the Black Hills Gold was discovered in the Black Hill of Dakota (the sacred land of the Sioux Indians)
