Question Answer
When working with aberrant behaviors: conduct and FBA. One should be working to reduce aberrant behaviors, and teach a functional alternative behavior through the use of proactive behavior, and reactive behavior.
Proactive proceedures include Identifying the function. Select the replacement behavior. Teach until Mastery. Concentrated and systematic teaching . Provide assistance and necessary. Provide an "A" reinforcer every x time for presence of replacement behavior. Making learning fun and natural.
Make Therapy Fun Enthusiastic Tone. Varied settings and instructions varied schedules and routines. Do not bore child by continuing a program that is already mastered. Do not punish good attending and performance by dragging out task. maintain a high success rate.
Reactive Procedures Create behavioral momentum. Provide "C" reinforcer every x minute. Disruptive Behavior results in least amount of attention necessary. Disruptive behavior result in the loss of opportunity for reinforcement. remain calm. follow all crisis emergency protocols.
A good behavior plan has: clear operational definition, clear proactive protocol, and clear measurement system. It has clear escalation cycle, staff trained, partnership.
How to reduce aberrant behavior: Aberrant behavior is maintained by socially mediated reinforcement (you in control). Discontinuing of a reinforcement of a previously reinforced behavior; primary effect is a decrease in frequency of behavior. With holding. Extinguish behavior not the student.
How to implement extinction: Begin with an operational definition the target behavior. Through observation or formal assessment. Catch them all. With hold reinforcement for target behavior. Be consistent. Monitor results. **Combine with reinforcement or other behavior.
extinction burst An extinction burst occurs when there is an increase in the frequency or intensity of the unwanted behavior when the extinction method is being used.
Enhancing Effectiveness Combine with other procedures. Use instructions. Increase number of trials. Include others. Consistency. Surviving the extinction burst. Reinforcement available from multiple sources. Activity itself is reinforcing. Extinction induced aggression. can be long process. severe problem behavior. resurgence and spontaneous recovery. changing topographies. hard to be consistent. would you want your behavior on extinction?
