| of mice and men was written by john steinbeck, although he was a wealthy man he had a huge intrest in farm workers and helped them out and thats how most of his work ideas were created. | The tragedy was based in 1929 a time of the great depression this lead to droughts and no money. due to the drying land farmers had no crops to sell therefore had to sell their farm to pay of there dept. many travelled to california hoping for work instead was left homeless |
| The story is written in third person which means the reader really gets a clear and unbiased understanding of the story. | George is one of the main characters. He is described by steinbeck as short and intelligent. he promised aunt clara to look after lennie. lennie and george are best friends and go everywhere with eachother. |
| lennie small- is quite quite the oppersite to his name he is described as a big and slow witted character that likes to stroke things because of his huge hands this leads to animals dieing such and the dog he later kills in the book. | Candy is a handicapped rancher he lost his hand in the ranch and is pretty much a useless suggesting thet the only reason the ranch have kept him on is because the injury happened ant work and they feel sorry for him. |
| crooks is a crippled black guy. meaning he is discriminated on by the rest of the ranch and also has a very bitter view on life ater on in the story he tells lennie to give up on his dream as hes heard far to many similar storys | curly is a small agressive guy. his dream was to be a boxer but insead works on his dads ranch. hes jealous of big guys suggesting that that is why he tried to start a fight with lennie. |
| slim is the most respected guy on the ranch. hes seen as a natural leader and people often ask for his advice | curley wife is a young pretty flirtatious woman. she seems very lonley on the ranch as none talks to her as they are scared of curley.her dream was to be an actress. Steinbeck also represents her as an item the appostrophe after the s on curly's suggests that she belongs to him. even slims dog has a name. |
| carlson is an insensitive aggresive guy. he often complains and likes stirring trouble carlson also kills candys dog | so the story starts off withe george and lennie spending the night at the brush near the pool. george tells lennie to come back here if something bad happens this already suggests that george trats lennie like a child. george then complains to lennie about if he didnt have hime to look after |
| he'd go to a brothel. lennie then appears sad to george cheers him up by reciting there dream lennie enjpoys petting animals therefore wants rabbits on his farm. they then go sleep ready for their job the next day | ch2- george and lennie are late for there first day which of course makes the boss angry. candy explains life on the ranch to them.curlys wife trys to flirt with them hoping for a bit of attention |
| ch3- includes dreams and the death of a dog. george opens up to slim we then learn more about george and lennies past. carlson wants to shoots candys dog. he does.candy then over hears george and lennies dream and wants in he offers them his money | curley then pops in and starts on lennie. lennie then gets really angry and crushes his hand the ranch truy and get lennie to stop eventually he does. slim persuades curley to say that he got his hand caught in the machine. |
| most people on the ranch head to town apart form lennie crooks and curlys wife. lennie tells crooks about his dream crooke then tells him to forget his dream as hes heard it all before, however when lennie mentions candys helping to make the dream he soon wants too | curlys wife over hears him this leads to her mocking the too. |
| ch4- dream is spoiled. it all happens in the barn lennie kills the puppy that slim gave to him and hides it. curlys wife finds out and she starts to open up to lennie about her dreams and why she left home and married curly this is when we realise that curlys wife may just be mis understood | curlys wife stupidly offers to let lennie stroke her hair . lennie being lennie wanted to keep on stroking the hair. curlys wife then gets scared so she screams and lenniebreaks her neck by accident trying to shut her up |
