What is nepotism? | When an official in the Church gives a position to a relative, even when they are undeserving/unqualifying. |
Who was Hus? What did he do? | Hus criticized the Roman Catholic Church and was condemned by a Church council to be burned at the stake. |
Who was Wycliffe? What did he do? | Wycliffe initiated the first translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He, like Luther, believed that everybody should be able to interpret the Bible for themselves. |
Who is Erasmus? | Erasmus tried to fix the Catholic Church from within. He published books criticizing the faults of the Church. |
What is heresy? What is a heretic? | Heresy is the crime of going directly against the teachings of the Church. A heretic is someone who commits the crime of heresy. |
What are indulgences? | Indulgences are rather like insurance policies for the soul. People would have to buy an indulgence for every mortal sin they committed in order to get themselves to heaven. |
Who is Tetzel? | Tetzel was the monk selling indulgences near the University of Wittenberg (Germany), near where Martin Luther lived. |
