Question Answer
What is another name for the circulatory system? Cardiovascular System
What are the four jobs of the circulatory system? -Delivers needed substances to cells -Carries wastes away from the cells - Helps regulate body temperature - Some cells in the blood also help to fight disease
What makes up the circulatory system? Made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
How does the circulatory system deliver materials? Blood transports Chemical messengers (like hormones), oxygen from your lungs, and glucose from you digestive system to your body cells.
Explain the process of how the circulatory system Removes Wastes - Blood takes waste from your body's cells - Blood transports carbon dioxide from you body to your lungs -Exhaled
Explain the process of how the circulatory system Regulate Body temperature - Change the amount of blood flow near the skin -Help carry heat and prevent heat loss
Explain the process of how the circulatory system Fights Disease Blood contains cells that attack diseases causing microorganism like bacteria
What is the heart? Heart = Hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood through the body through blood vessels
What are atria? Upper chambers (2) of the heart that receives blood
What are ventricles? Lower Chambers (2) of the heart that pump out of the heart
What is the pacemaker? Pacemaker= -a group of cells in the right atrium that sends out signals that regulate heart rate - Signals make the heart contract
What is a valve and what does it do? A valve = a flap of tissue that prevents blood from flowing backward - They also separate the ventricles and the large blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart - Valves separate the atria from ventricles
What does a heartbeat sound like? Why? -The heartbeat sounds like a "lup-dup" - It comes from the different valves contracting
Describe and be able to sketch the blood flow in the body. Right Atrium - Right Ventricle - Arteries - Capilaries- Veins - Left Atrium - Left Ventricle
What are the three kinds of blood vessels? 1. Arteries 2. Veins 3. Cappilaries
Where are blood vessels found? Blood vessels run through all the tissue in your body
Describe the width of your blood vessels. Some blood vessels are as wide as your thumb, but most are as thin as human hair.
Where do arteries carry blood. Carry blood away from the heart
Describe the three tissue layers of the walls of arteries. Innermost layer: Allows blood to flow freely Middle layer: regulates the amount of blood sent to different organs Outermost layer: Enables arteries to withstand the force of pumping blood
Where does blood go after leaving the arteries? The capilarries
Why do capillary walls only have one layer of cells? This allows materials from the bloodstream to pass through the walls and to the body easily
What happens when capillaries merge? When capillaries merge they form blood vessels called veins
Why does blood enter the veins? Blood enters the veins to go to the arteries
Compare and contrast the walls of the veins to the walls of the arteries the walls have the same layers as the arteries but are THINNER than the walls of the arteries
What are the four components: Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
What % of blood is made of cells About 45% of blood is made up of cells
Describe Plasma and its functions Most materials travel in the plasma Plasma can carry nutrients, fats, vitamins, minerals, chemical messengers, carbon dioxide, and other waste products
What is the job of the RBCs? - Take up oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to the cells throughout the body
What is the hemoglobin A protein that contains iron and binds to oxygen molecules in the lungs
What are white blood cells? White blood cells are the body's disease fighters
What are the three main jobs a WBC might have? Recognize disease-causing organisms and alert the invasion - Produce chemicals to fight the invader - Surround and kill the disease-causing organism
Compare the size of WBC and RBC WBC are bigger than RBC
What are Platelets? Platelets are cell fragments that help form blood clots
What is the function of fibrin? -platelets \ release the protein, fibrin. -Fibrin weaves a tiny net of fibers across the cut to help heal the cut.
