Question | Answer |
HABITAT Is the place where biotic organisms live and can find everything they need to survive. Habitats provide all the conditions needed to support and sustain life, like: | Water, air, food, shelter, energy, etc. |
ECOSYSTEM A community or group of living organisms that interact and live with each other in a specific environment. It's the interaction/relation between biotic and abiotic factors in a habitat. What is the size of an ecosystem? | Ecosystems may vary in size and shape. They can be a puddle, a lake, or even a forest! |
PHOTOSYNTHESIS It's the process where plants produce their own food. The chlorophyll is responsible for absorbing sunlight, and it also makes the plants' leaves green. What would be the word equation for the photosynthesis process? | Light Energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water = Glucose (food) and Oxygen. |
CELLULAR RESPIRATION It's the process where plants "breathe" oxygen, and combine it with glucose to create energy. What would be the word equation for the cellular respiration? | Glucose (food) + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy (for the plant to live) |
FOOD CHAIN A linear diagram made to show the flow of energy through biotic elements and represent how living things are connected to each other by the food they eat. The arrows always point from the food source toward the organism the energy is flowing to, and not the other way around. Food chains are organized in trophic levels - trophic means: relating to feeding and nutrition. What are these levels, and what are their definitions? | PRODUCERS: are always in the beggining of the food chain, because they produce their own food to survive. PRIMARY CONSUMERS: are plant eaters/herbivores. SECONDARY and TERCIARY CONSUMERS: can be omnivores or carnivores. APEX CONSUMERS: don't have a predator to eat them in their natural habitat, they are the ones on the top of the food chain, and are always carnivores or omnivores. |
FOOD WEB Is the interconnection between many food chains from the same habitat/ecosystem. Can the extinction of one type of living thing affect a whole food chain? | Yes, because it makes the whole ecosystem imbalanced. The extincition of a species affects both its predators and preys - the predators may starve, while the preys may stay out of control (because there will be few animals to eat them, so they will reproduce and increase in number). |
ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION Process where we form a community (place where different species interact with each other). The primary succession is when we form an ecosystem for the first time, it's the development of a habitat from scratch. The secondary succession is when an ecosystem suffers a disaster or devastation, and has to be re-formed. What are the steps of a succession? | 1- Bare Rock/Soil 2- Pioneer Species 3 - Intermediate Species 4 - Climax Community |
CARBON CYCLE Process in which the carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere, and then released again. What causes the removal and the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere? | Removal: the photosynthesis process is the only one who causes the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. RELEASE: the cellular respiration of all living things, the decomposition, the air polution, the deforastation, the forest fires, and the burining of fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, and natural gas) are the main causes of carbon dioxide release. |
