Question Answer
Relationships break down for a number of reasons which we have considered from the opposite perspective when looking at relationship maintenance.
According to social exchange theory, relationships may break down if a person feels the relationship is costing them more than it is
rewarding them. Furthermore we are constantly checking our comparison level/ cl for alternatives which may lead to dissatisfaction with a
relationship and subsequent breakdown
According to equity theory, relationship breakdown may occur as a result of perceived inequity, creating
distress and dissatisfaction. These theories can therefore be described and evaluated when
a question asks about relationship breakdown, but the most important thing is to relate them directly to relationship breakdown , rather than maintenance.
