Question Answer
First line of defense= Innate Immunity Innate resistance/barriers (ex: skin, mucosa)
Second line of defense= Innate Immunity Initiated by damage to first line of defense, local and systemic inflammation Protects from further injury, prevents infection and promotes healing
Third line of defense= Acquired Immunity (Ch. 8) Adaptive or specific Immunity, slow to develop, has memory cells, rapidly targets and eradicates during second exposure
First line of defense: In detail Physical Barriers: Skin, mucosa of GI tract and respiratory tract; Mechanical Barriers: mucosal cells are routinely replaced to remove bacteria, cleansing by vomit and urination, cilia move mucus to be expelled by coughing
(Contd.) First line of defense: In detail Biochemical Barriers: epithelial derived (ex: mucus, perspiration, saliva, tears, earwax) Antimicrobial peptides toxic to bacterial, fungus and viruses Antimicrobials penetrate/disrupt bacteria cell membranes, are also released by inflammatory cells
Second line of defense= Inflammatory response Initiated by cellular injury and tissue damage Interdependent systems: (1) Mast cell degranulation (release of mediators and chemotactic factors) (2) Activation of plasma protein systems (complement, clotting and kinin systems) (3) Release of mediators from damaged cells
