5 Properties of MInerals | Naturally Occuring Inorganic Solid Crystal Structure Definit Chemical Compositon |
Luster | Luster is the term used to describe how light is reflected from a mineral's surface. |
Color | Color.......lol obviously the color of the mineral ❤ |
Streak / Streak Test | The streak of a mineral is the color of its powder. |
Density | Mass in a given space, or mass per unit. |
Hardness | Friedrich Mohs an Austrian mineral expert invented a test to describe the hardness of minerals. Called the Mohs hardness scale. 1.) Talc- the softest known mineral, talc flakes when scratched by a fingernail. 5.) Appetite - A steel knife can scratch it. 10.) Diamond- The hardest known mineral, diamond can scratch all other substances. |
Crystal Systems | The crystals of each mineral grow atom by atom to form that mineral's crystal structure. Geologists classify be structured into six groups based on number and angle of crystal faces. These groups are called crystal systems. Sometimes the crystal structure is obvious from the minerals appearence. Crystals that grow and an open space can be almost perfectly formed. But crystals that grow in a tight space are often are incompletely formed. In other minerals the crystal structure is visible only under a microscope. |
Cleavage and Fracture | Cleavage: Is when a mineral splits easily along flat surfaces. Fracture: Is when a mineral breaks apart in an irregular way. |
Special Properties | Some minerals can be identified by special physical properties. Examples: Magnetism, Glows in the Dark |
How to measure the volume of minerals in a beaker of water. | You fill a beaker of water with 20 mL of water then place the mineral inside the beaker. Next see how many mL it went up. |
How to measure the mass of mineral on the scale in class ? | If you want something heavier than you put it on one scale and if it goes down more its heavier. If you want it to be equal it has to be the same distance away from the ground. If you want it to be lighter the mineral has to go up. |
