Question | Answer |
What are the three different types of experimental design? | Repeated groups, independent groups, matched pairs |
How do you recruit for independent groups? | 1. recruit participants 2.divide participants into 2 3. one group does one part 4. Other group does another part 5. Measure the DV for each group 6. Compare |
What are the strengths of independent measures? | If the participants are only doing one half of the the study then reduced demand characteristics. |
what are the weaknesses of independent measures? | Changes in DV might be due to participant variables (some people are naturally more able than others) - over come by random allocation. Requires more participants so it's more expensive |
How do you recruit for repeated measures? | 1. Recruit participants 2. All of them does the task with the IV for 1 condition 3. Repeat the test with the IV set for condition 2 |
What are the strengths of repeated measures? | Participant variables are minimized as we only use one group. There isn't a need to recruit so many participants so it's less expensive. |
What are the weaknesses of repeated measures? | Demand characteristics. Order effects/fatigue effects/practice effects (the way in which we present the task might effect performance). over come by counterbalancing ABBA (A = 1st test, B = 2nd test) |
How do you recruit for matched pairs? | 1. Recruit participants 2. Find out the people you have in the group (relevance) 3. Find match 4. Matched but in separate groups and compare results |
What are the weaknesses for matched pairs? | It's time consuming |
What are the strengths for matched pairs? | It avoids participant variables Avoids order effect by using two groups. |
