cognition | All the mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, and communicating. |
metacognition | The awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes. It involves self-regulation of cognition through activities such as planning, monitoring, and evaluating one's understanding and performance. |
concept | A mental grouping of similar objects, events, ideas, or people. |
formal concept | A concept that has a very specific set of rules and features. Mathematics, for example, is full of formal concepts. In psychology, there are some formal concepts such as rules dictating double-blind experiments, sleep stages, and conditioned stimuli. |
natural concept | A concept that is more fuzzy and allow us to interpret the world around us. These might include concepts such as justice and freedom. |
prototype | A mental image or best example of a category. Matching new items to a prototype provides a quick and easy method for sorting items into categories. |
schema | A cognitive framework or concept that helps organize and interpret information. |
assimilation | Assimilation is the process of integrating new information into an existing schema without changing the schema. |
accommodation | Accommodation is the process of modifying an existing schema or creating a new one to incorporate new information that doesn't fit the existing schema. |
creativity | Creativity is the ability to produce ideas that are both novel and valuable. |
convergent thinking | Narrowing the available problem solutions to determine the single best solution. |
divergent thinking | Expanding the number of possible problem solutions; creative thinking that diverges in different directions. |
