Motte and Bailey | Type of castle built by the Normans. Made of wood so likely to get burned down |
Motte | A mound of earth with steep sides and a wooden castle on top |
Bailey | Flat area below the Motte, surrounded by fence and moat. Housed soldiers and horses |
Keep | The tower in a stone castle - the Lord's house, usually containing the dungeon, the great hall, and the chapel |
Battlements | Gaps at the top of the wall surrounding the castle, through which arrows, stones, or boiling liquids could be thrown |
Moat | Deep ditch around a castle or town for defence, often filled with water |
Portcullis | A heavy gate in the curtain wall surrounding a castle |
