Question Answer
Output Device A piece of hardware that is used to display or output data that has been processed or stored on the computer. Different Output Devices: - Printers - Monitors - Speakers - Headsets - Lights - Plotters
Inkjet Printers Not often used at home but are seen in businesses. they work by hitting little pins against an inked ribbon to mark out characters. Laser Printers Use heat in order to produce an impression on paper.
Dot Matrix Printers Very popular with businesses because of their high speed when printing in colour or black and white. Thermal Printers Popular with home users but less popular with businesses because of the high cost of ink cartridges.
Screens / Monitors / VDU Screens are also called monitors & VDUs (Visual Display Units) They allow users to view processed information from the computer. The most common screens found in recent times are flat screens because they are better as they take up less space and are lighter. Speakers Speakers are a vital type of output device and are more commonly used than printers. Speakers allow you to: - Listen to Voicemail - Listen to Radio Stations - Listen to Music - Make use of Multimedia - Make and receive phone calls over the internet.
Headsets These combine and input device and an output device together, a microphone and a loudspeaker. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is where computer uses can make free telephone/ video calls to other users over the internet by using a Headset. Data Projectors Data Projectors are quite expensive but are common in schools and business demonstrations. They project whatever is on a computer/ laptop onto a large screen however they can be projected anywhere such as a wall. A good thing about these is that the prices are falling and the quality is improving.
Plotters Plotters produce high quality line diagrams on paper. They are used by people such as architects and scientists . They work by drawing lines, curves etc. using a pen. There are three different types of Plotters available. These being a Flat-Bed, a Drum and a Pinch roller. Lights Lights are known as LED's and are useful in presentations. They last approximately !00,00 hours and can either be dim or very bright.
