Question Answer
ASCII American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A standard binary coding system for characters, symbols and numbers. An earlier character set.
Unicode A standard binary coding system/character set that has superseded ASCII. It has 16 bits rather than 8 so can code for 65 thousand+ rather than 128 characters. Contains everything from a to a happy emoji!
Parity Bit Method of checking data that adds an extra bit to the data to show whether the number of 1s was odd or even.
Majority Voting Method of checking for errors in transmitted data by sending the same data multiple times and comparing each version, the system goes with the majority.
Check Digit A digit added to the end of binary data to check the data is accurate. The digit is derived from the data in some way so it can be checked on the receiving end, a common method is the modulo-11 method.
Bitmap An image made up of a 2D array of pixels.
Pixel An individual picture element holding a binary number or reference to a memory location holding a binary number which represents the colour of the pixel.
Resolution Width * height or pixels/inch (dpi).
Colour depth The number of bits allocated to represent the colour of a pixel in a bitmap image.
Vector Graphic An image made up of objects and coordinates, generated by a set of instructions and mathematical forumlae by reference to a point of origin.
Compression The process of reducing the number of bits required to represent data, in order to reduce file size.
Run-Length Encoding A method of compressing data by eliminating repeated data.
Dictionary-Based Encoding A method of compressing text or binary files by assigning commonly occurring patters a token and using that to represent them, while storing the original values once in a dictionary or map so the data can be reconstructed later.
