Question Answer
Wool Sheep, goat (alpaca), Rabbit (angora). Sheep wool is mostly produced in Australia and New Zealand Can be blended, elastic, when wet wearer stays warm and dry
Woolen/Worsted Yarn Woolen yarn is fuzzier than Worsted Yarn, which is smooth
Shoddy/Virgin Wool Shoddy yarn is made of fibers that have been reduced and reused unlike a Virgin (touched for the very first time)
Silk long threads is raw silk, cut thread is made into spun silk. China first, now Italy, India, France, Asia Minor, Japan. Can be blended, dyed, printed
Bombyxmari A cultivated worm whose cocoon is used for silk, also used is wild moths.
Cotton Grown in Africa, North/South America, India, West Indies. Fibers cover the seeds and vary based on location. Versatile, absors 40% weight in water, strong, easily blended and dyed.
Cotton Linters Short fibers of cotton used to make some types of Rayon.
Linen Made from Flax in Russia, Northern Ireland, Mid-Europe. Lengths from stalk are a yard or longer.
Moygashel Trade name for rayon fibers on a lined loom
Acrylic Made from coal carbonization and natural gas
Acrilan (Chemstand trademark) Lightweight, strong, can be permanently pressed. Blends.
Courtelle (Courtaulds trademark) Strong, soft, warm, washable, blendable.
Cellulose Made form trees, used in blends in 1900 and made into pure dress fabric in 1924.
Acetate Made from cotton linters or wood pulp, low melting point, fades, warm, resilient, blends.
Cuprammonium Rayon (Bemberg) Made from cotton liners, fine, silky, weak when wet.
Triacetate Made from cotton liters, resilient, can be perm pressed, blends.
Viscose Rayon From wood pulp, versatile, absorbent, weak when wet.
Polyamide (nylon) From coal, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen. filament is stretched and spun into a yarn. Strong, elastic, can be perm pressed, non absorbent so good for rain and bad for sweat.
Polyester From petroleum, doesn't crease, non absorbing, static, strong, blends.
Polyurethrane from petri-chemical industry, replacing rubberized elastics, finer than rubber, made into foam for backing, stretches.
protein From Casein (milk proteins) weak, soft, absorbent, blends with cotton, rayon, wool.
Metal Threads 2 types to make metallic head or strip: Tinsel: core of copper, metal, or cotton wound in gold or silver thread. Plastic Covered Metal (Lurex): aluminum coated in colored adheisive and polyester for trimmings, embroidery and hand sewing.
