Question | Answer |
When was the Romantic period? Is it different then the Victorian period? | lasted from the 1660s to the 18th century. The Victorian period started in the 1830s. They have overlap. The start of one doesn't mean the end of the other so they are different in style but could exist together |
What do we call the repetition of Camelot and the lady of shallot throughout the poem? | this is called a refrain |
How are Camelot and Shalott described differently? | Camelot is described as a place of plenty, with music and parties and people coming and going. Shalott is described with its quivering trees and grayness as a remote, sinister and otherworldly. Also the palace on Shalott is very large |
How is this poem structured? | it starts out as iambic tetrameter but then switches to troca which gives it a most sinister, spell like quality |
Describe the lady of Shalott in the beginning of the poem? How does she feel? | she is cursed so she is unable to look out the window and see the world with her own eyes. at the start she is ownly slightly bored and lonely. She can busy herself with her tapestry to remain content and only ever so often she sees something in her mirror and gets tired of the shadows. |
What are the two reasons for the mirror? | one, to allow her to see her tapestry from the front while she works, and two so she can see out her window without invoking the curse |
How does seeing Lancelot make her feel? What does she do? | She falls in love with him from afar. Even though she knows she will be cursed she goes to the window so she can see him. In that moment she is wholly tired of shadows, and lonliness, and her lack of knight or lover. She would rather sacrifice her safety and comfort for true life |
How is this poem similar to "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" | both poems have a fairy-like lady, sinister worlds, a cursed women and infatuated women, a fantasies that someone wants to make real |
Why would you say the poem is about paradoxes? | the poem demonstrated the struggle between safety and security versus reality and living. |
Why could you argue that the Lady of Shalott represents the artist? | some say artists have to be detached from the world. If they try to live too normally they loose their gifts, like the lady lost her life. perhaps her tapestry is her art that she abandoned. |
