Electrolysis The use of electricity to bring about a chemical reaction
Electrolyte A substance that when molten or dissolved in water, allows an electric current to pass through it
Electrodes Rods that sit in the electrolyte and make electric contact with it.
Anode The positive type of electrode
Cathode The negative type of electrode
OPRN rule Oxidation occurs at the Positive electrode, reduction occurs at the negative electrode
Inert electrode Electrodes which do not react with the electrolyte in which it is placed, eg Platinum
Active electrodes React with the electrolyte in which they are placed, eg copper
